Copier toner cartridge basics

When considering a copier toner cartridge there are a few things you will need to know such as:

  • Yield - Yield means the total number of copies you can make in one month.

  • Coverage - Is the surface area of the page covered in ink expressed as a percentage. For example if there is a page printed in black text the text coverage represents usually about 20% of ink on the white page.

  • Developer - Is the substance mixed with toner to attract the toner to the copier drum and fuse to the paper. If you have more than one toner color then you will most likely also need separate developers. When copies turn too light then that usually means you need developer. If the copy color is uneven then that's a sign that toner is dry or running low.

The yield is probably the most important of all the above factors when replacing your copier toner cartridge. The reason for this is that, generally speaking, if the page yield is high then your printing costs per page are lower. Also the lower the yield the more often you need to replace your toner and that becomes expensive.

Always make sure that the page yield of your copier toner cartridge is the highest you can get. Yield and coverage together determine to a large extent your total expense.
